Freese, Cervelli, Mercer sit out after being hit by pitches

June 3rd, 2016

PITTSBURGH -- The Pirates surrendered as many runs in Thursday's loss to the Marlins as they gave up hitters to injury, and it showed on Friday.
The three players hit by pitches, catcher Francisco Cervelli, shortstop Jordy Mercer and infielder David Freese, were all out of the lineup in Friday's 9-2 loss to the Angels.
Cervelli sustained a bruised right foot, Freese took a 94-mph fastball to the hand and Mercer injured his left elbow. Pittsburgh released its lineup about an hour before Friday's game, likely because the team had just flown back from Miami and had not had time to evaluate its injuries yet.

Though center fielder Andrew McCutchen left in the sixth inning on Thursday with a swollen right thumb, which had been nagging him for over a week, he was in the lineup on Friday and went 1-for-4.
Chris Stewart filled in for Cervelli at catcher, Sean Rodriguez started at shortstop for Mercer with Jung Ho Kang at third.

"And then we do what we do," Hurdle said. "Our guys pop up, they show up, next man up, go play. We fought and scratched our way back in."
