Hardy (elbow) lands on DL; Carpenter recalled

August 17th, 2018

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Tigers have placed left-handed starter on the 10-day disabled list due to tendinitis in his left elbow, the club announced Friday. The move is retroactive to Aug. 15.
"He threw today, went out to play catch and still feels a little tendinitis in his elbow," Detroit manager Ron Gardenhire said. "We can't take a chance of starting him, so he's gonna go on the DL and we're gonna let this thing calm down. It's not a big deal, but it is there and he still feels it. I'm not putting him out on the mound like that."
Hardy made his last scheduled start on Aug. 14 and gave up four runs on five hits in four innings of work against the White Sox. He topped out at 88.2 mph with his fastball, according to Statcast™.

In a corresponding move, the Tigers recalled lefty from Triple-A Toledo and Gardenhire said he will be available to throw vs. the Twins on Friday at Target Field.
It is also possible that Carpenter could slot into the rotation and start on Saturday for the Tigers. Detroit has yet to name a starter for that day, but will also need to come up with a starter for Sunday, as Hardy was slated to take the hill for Detroit's series finale in Minnesota.
"We're gonna activate Carpenter tonight so we have 25 men available for tonight's ballgame, hoping we don't have to use the 25th man, and go from there," Gardenhire said.
Carpenter is 0-1 with a 6.39 ERA in four appearances -- three of which were starts -- at the big-league level this season. His last appearance for the Tigers came on May 31, when he held the Angels to one run over four innings.

But he suffered an oblique injury in that start and was sidelined until July 13. Since Carpenter came off the DL, he has made six appearances, all starts, in Toledo. In his most recent outing on Aug. 10, he threw 98 pitches.
"I think I'm progressing really nicely," Carpenter said. "Not having any pain. That's the main concern. Strength is pretty much almost there."
The Tigers needed to use six relievers during Thursday's 15-8 loss to the Twins, and will hope for a deep outing from Friday starter Matthew Boyd to spell their depleted bullpen.
If that plan goes to the wayside, and Detroit needs to turn to its bullpen early on Friday, Gardenhire hopes to avoid putting a position player on the mound, even under emergency circumstances.
"Well, I only have three position players and one of them's injured right now," Gardenhire said in reference to his bench. "I mean, I'm not gonna use my backup catcher to pitch, I don't think. … So the pitchers are gonna pitch."
While position players taking the mound has become more commonplace this season, Gardenhire typically tries to avoid putting everyday players in that situation. He can only recall doing so once in his career.
"Michael Cuddyer talked me into it in Boston," Gardenhire said of the former Twins outfielder. "And he was throwing knuckleballs everywhere. Although it was entertaining, I was scared to death the whole time."
