Maybin day to day with left thumb sprain

DETROIT -- might have been held out of Thursday's lineup as a day off, regardless of his health, after playing all nine innings on Wednesday night. A left thumb sprain, however, put a little more gravity on the decision.
Maybin, who appeared to sustain the injury diving at 's second-inning double, stayed in the game before undergoing tests afterwards.
"They did an X-ray and an ultrasound. There was no tissue damage," manager Brad Ausmus said on Thursday morning. "It's just a sprain, a mild sprain. It's day to day."
Maybin has battled a sore left wrist from time to time since a pitch fractured it early in Spring Training. He missed a few days with a strained back a couple weeks ago.

If the thumb injury lingers, it could have an impact on the Tigers' roster. Ausmus employed an eight-man bullpen for most of the last two months until Detroit optioned to Triple-A Toledo to make room for 's return from the disabled list on Thursday. That allowed the Tigers to keep after activating from the DL.
Collins, who can play all three outfield positions, started in center field with Maybin out on Thursday. Without him, super-utility player would be the backup center fielder.
