DETROIT -- The sore left wrist that held Cameron Maybin out of the lineup the last two days lingered long enough for the Tigers to issue more than rest. Maybin received an anti-inflammatory injection to deal with the issue, which has been bothering him since at least last week's series against the Angels.
Maybin received the shot following Monday's win over the Blue Jays. He was held out of the starting lineup the last two days to allow the shot to take effect. Add in Thursday's off-day, and he'll have three days to let it settle in before he hopes to return Friday against the Yankees.
"He said the last two days it felt good," manager Brad Ausmus said, "but there's no reason to aggravate it. So we just went ahead and sat him yesterday and today, day off tomorrow. All expectation is that he'll be back in the lineup."
Maybin fractured the wrist on a pitch from the Yankees' Luis Severino early in Spring Training. Lingering issues with the wrist and his shoulder delayed his rehab, and he returned from the disabled list a few weeks ago. Maybin had a cortisone shot during the rehab process as well.
The wrist came into question again when he left one of last week's games against the Angels in the seventh inning with the Tigers attempting a comeback
"Every once in a while I'd take a swing on certain pitches and just kinda [felt] like a stinger, like a football player would get a stinger," Maybin said. "Nothing I couldn't continue to play through, but we just thought better to take care of it now than let it get worse."
Maybin entered Tuesday's comeback win as a pinch-runner for Miguel Cabrera in the ninth inning. He stayed in the game in center field, and his spot in the lineup was two batters away when Ian Kinsler hit his walk-off single. If Kinsler and Andrew Romine had been retired without advancing Justin Upton from third, Maybin might have had a spot where he had to test his swing a day after the shot.
"I probably would've swung," Maybin said. "If I'd have needed to move some guys, then [I would've bunted], but I'm always ready to hit. As long as you make contact, it's OK."

• Both Mark Lowe and Anibal Sanchez delivered scoreless outings in Wednesday's 7-2 loss, as they worked on mechanical adjustments in low-leverage situations. Sanchez pitched 2 1/3 innings of one-hit ball, followed by a hitless eighth inning on one walk from Lowe. The latter said he was working on creating more leverage to the plate in his delivery.
