CHICAGO -- A Tigers-White Sox tilt Saturday that began with Chris Sale being sent home for a clubhouse incident and continued through rain delays ended without a result. A third rain delay suspended play after eight innings with a 3-3 score.
Play will resume Sunday at 2:10 p.m. ET, the original time for the series finale. The originally scheduled game will resume shortly after the suspended game reaches a resolution.
The scenario played out much like Thursday's rain-shortened Tigers win. In Saturday's case, however, the game was tied thanks to Nick Castellanos' RBI single in the eighth, bringing Detroit back from what was once a 3-1 deficit.
Storms were approaching as Shane Greene worked the bottom of the eighth, and heavy rain started as Greene retired Tyler Saladino to strand the go-ahead run in scoring position.
The umpiring crew, knowing the rain wasn't going to let up anytime soon, initially hoped to play through, sending the White Sox and closer David Robertson -- who came on for the final out in the top of the eighth -- back out to the field to warm up for the top of the ninth. Just as Jarrod Saltalamacchia was readying to lead off the inning, however, crew chief Jeff Nelson reversed course and called for the grounds crew to bring out tarp at 11:21 p.m. ET.
Play was suspended 46 minutes later. Add in a 10-minute delay to the start of the game, plus a 1:14 delay after the second inning, and the game featured 2 hours, 57 minutes of play and over two hours of delays.
The rosters will be the same when play resumes Sunday with the start of the ninth inning. However, any player already used and replaced in the game will not be available, leaving Chicago's bullpen -- which used six pitchers -- likely short for the ninth.
