July 23: RHP diagnosed with mild right shoulder strain
The news was relatively encouraging on Olson, who returned to Detroit for tests after he left his start last Saturday at Toronto. Manager A.J. Hinch characterized the injury as “mild” Tuesday morning during his weekly interview segment on MLB Network Radio.

That’s relatively good news for the Tigers, in that he won’t need surgery to recover. On the other hand, there’s no clear timetable for when he might be able to return.

“He’s got a shoulder strain,” Hinch said later Tuesday. “So what that means is there’s going to be a period where he’s not throwing, and there’s going to be a throwing progression.”

RHP (right shoulder strain)
Expected return:

Olson, who left the Tigers' 7-3 win over Toronto on July 21 with right shoulder soreness, has a mild shoulder strain after further examination in Detroit. The Tigers still do not have a timetable on his potential return, but he, at least, will not need surgery. (Last updated: July 23)

Carpenter began a running progression in addition to hitting activities over the All-Star break. He said ahead of the break that he had felt good in recent days, and the hope is he's getting closer to a rehab assignment. His move to the 60-day IL doesn't affect his timeline for a return.
