J.D. Martinez nets AL Player of Week honors

Tigers right fielder J.D. Martinez has been named the American League Player of the Week after leading the Majors in slugging and total bases last week.

Over six games, Martinez hit .458 (11-for-24) with six runs, four home runs, one double and 10 RBIs. He was tied for first in the Majors in home runs, in addition to leading in slugging (1.000) and total bases (24).

It is his second career weekly honor. He last won on June 22 last year with the Tigers.

Martinez went 3-for-6 with two runs and his 20th home run of the season Tuesday against the Pirates, finishing June with 16 runs, 11 home runs and 26 RBIs.

His 11 homers in June are the most in franchise history since Mickey Tettleton also hit 11 in June 1993.

Then on Saturday, with his 22nd homer of the season, Martinez became one of four Major League players (Nelson Cruz, Bryce Harper and Giancarlo Stanton) to hit nine home runs in 44 or fewer at-bats this season, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Martinez is one of just three players (Bobby Higginson in 2000 and Marcus Thames in 2008) to do it in a Tigers uniform in the last 25 years.

Martinez has homered in 10 of his last 12 games and has 13 home runs and 19 RBIs in his last 19 games. He has already match his career high of 23 home runs, set last year.
