SEATTLE -- Jose Cabrera needs a surge of votes in the final days of the Esurance MLB All-Star Game Ballot to have any chance of getting back into the starting lineup for the Midsummer Classic. As voting heads into the home stretch, he's the only Tiger with a chance.
That chance is quickly fading. Despite a resurgence at the plate, the Tigers' first baseman has fallen to third in voting among AL first basemen, plummeting out of a close race with Oakland's Yonder Alonso. Cabrera is now about 105,000 votes behind Kansas City's Eric Hosmer, who enjoyed a sudden surge of votes over the past week.
Cabrera hit a walk-off home run to beat the Rays on Thursday, followed by a go-ahead homer off Chris Archer on Saturday.
Cabrera is the only Tiger in the top five at his respective position. Though Alex Avila might have the best statistical argument of any Tiger for an All-Star spot with a .319 average, 10 home runs and 27 RBIs entering Tuesday, he's well off the pace at catcher, where Royals backstop Salvador Perez holds a commanding lead. Avila might stand a better chance on the players' ballot, which decides many of the All-Star reserve spots.
Otherwise, the Tigers might end up without an All-Star position player for the first time since 2000.
Fans may cast votes for starters at MLB.com and all 30 club sites -- on computers, tablets and smartphones -- exclusively online using the 2017 Esurance MLB All-Star Game Ballot until Thursday, June 29, at 11:59 p.m. ET. On smartphones and tablets, fans can also access the ballot via the MLB.com At Bat and MLB.com Ballpark mobile apps. Vote up to five times in any 24-hour period for a maximum of 35 ballots cast.
Following the announcement of the 2017 All-Star starters, reserves and pitchers, fans should return to MLB.com and cast their 2017 Esurance MLB All-Star Game Final Vote for the final player on each league's All-Star roster. Then on Tuesday, July 11, while watching the 2017 All-Star Game presented by MasterCard live on FOX, fans may visit MLB.com to submit their choices for the Ted Williams Most Valuable Player Award presented by Chevrolet with the 2017 MLB All-Star Game MVP Vote.
The 88th Midsummer Classic, at Marlins Park in Miami, will be televised nationally by FOX Sports; in Canada by Rogers Sportsnet and RDS; and worldwide by partners in more than 160 countries.
