Perez making a splash with his bat

CHICAGO -- It looked for a while like rookie callup Hernan Perez would make the biggest impact during this big league stint with his glove. Then he hit an inside-the-park home run.

Well, technically it was a triple and an error. But Perez will take it. It would have been the young infielder's first home run, but instead he'll settle for his first triple.

"When I saw [third-base coach Tom Brookens] sending me home, I said, 'I have to get there however I can,'" Perez said.

During the sixth inning of Tuesday night's 6-2 victory, Perez laced a line drive into the left-center-field gap and White Sox left fielder Dayan Viciedo misplayed it badly, allowing Perez to come around to score. On a day in which he made some shining plays in the field, his race around the bases stood out.

"Usually when I'm pitching, I don't show much emotion, but I was pretty pumped for him," starting pitcher Rick Porcello said. "An inside-the-parker -- or a triple. That was awesome for him. I was happy to see it. He swung the bat well and played great defense. He had a heck of a game."

With Omar Infante on the disabled list, Perez has gotten the at-bats this week against Chicago's left-handed starters. He was batting .300 with 28 doubles, two triples, four home runs and 35 RBIs in 86 games with Double-A Erie this year.

"He's got great instincts," Porcello said. "He breaks to the ball real quick. A lot of those balls he was making plays on are base hits normally, and he just did a heck of a job. He's quick, he's got a great arm, which allows him to make some tough throws. He's been doing a great job while Omar's been out."
