Tigers thwart Bucs' steal attempt on overturned call
Ausmus wins challenge after Avila, Kinsler combine to catch Polanco
DETROIT -- The Tigers won a replay challenge and a seventh-inning out against the Pirates on Tuesday night, when Gregory Polanco's stolen base was overturned upon review.
With the Pirates holding a 4-2 lead, Polanco reached base on a one-out single off Al Alburquerque, then tried to take off for second with Jordy Mercer batting. Second-base umpire Paul Schrieber initially ruled that Polanco slid in ahead of second baseman Ian Kinsler's tag, but Tigers manager Brad Ausmus challenged the play.
It took just 49 seconds for the call to be overturned and Alex Avila to be credited with his 30th would-be basestealer retired in 86 attempts, a 35-percent rate.
For Ausmus and replay official/defensive coordinator Matt Martin, meanwhile, it was their 17th call overturned in 28 challenges this season.
