Wilhelmsen declines Rangers' outright, becomes free agent

June 17th, 2016

Right-hander Tom Wilhelmsen declined his outright assignment by the Rangers to Triple-A Round Rock on Friday and will become a free agent.
The 32-year-old had struggled heavily in 2016, his first season with Texas, posting a 10.55 ERA in 21 relief appearances. After his most recent outing on June 13, in which he was charged with six runs on nine hits in just one inning of work, Wilhelmsen was optioned to Triple-A.
The Rangers then put Wilhelmsen on waivers to open a spot on their 40-man roster, and he cleared waivers on Friday. At that point, Texas decided to outright him to Round Rock, but Wilhelmsen declined the assignment, prompting his free agency.
