Tomas starting to hit with more authority
D-backs rookie working on aggressiveness at plate
LOS ANGELES -- Yasmany Tomas is starting to look more like the player the D-backs thought they were getting when they signed the Cuban free agent to a six-year, $68.5 million deal in the offseason.
Tomas was 4-for-7 in his past two games heading into Friday's matchup with the Dodgers and has begun to pull the ball more and drive it.
"The swing is all about the work I've been doing the last few weeks," Tomas said. "I've been watching video, I've been working in the cage trying to let the ball get a little closer before I swing. And at the same time before I'm connecting, I'm thinking about being aggressive with my swing."
During Spring Training and his first bunch of at-bats during the regular season, Tomas seemed to look to hit the ball to right field, shooting the hole at first.
"Great hitters when they come up to the big leagues they hit the ball the other way and then they eventually learn how to pull the ball," D-backs manager Chip Hale said. "You'd much rather have a hitter that can use the opposite field and then pull as they get older in their career."
