Wolters' late heroics don't hold up vs. Reds

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Steve Selsky belted a two-run double to left with one out in the ninth to give the Reds a 5-4 walk-off win over the Indians on Monday in a Cactus League clash at Goodyear Ballpark.

With runners on first and second, Selsky ripped the first pitch he saw from Indians reliever Preston Guilmet down the third-base line to score Argenis Diaz and Ramon Santiago, who reached on back-to-back singles.

Indians left fielder Tyler Holt was shaken up on the play.

"He slipped and kind of knocked the wind out of him," Indians manager Terry Francona said. "He just kind of snapped his neck. I think he's OK. He just kind of lost his feet. I think he's OK."

With the game deadlocked at 3 in the ninth, Reds reliever Jumbo Diaz, a bullpen candidate, issued two walks and paid for it. With one out and two runners on, Tony Wolters hit an RBI single to left field to score Joe Sever.

Cincinnati took a 3-0 lead when it sent nine to the plate in the second inning against Indians starter Corey Kluber. Jay Bruce started the rally with a leadoff double to center field. Ryan Ludwick followed with a single on the ground to left field. Both runners scored on Todd Frazier's triple to the right-field wall.

Frazier made it a three-run game when he scored on Zack Cozart's sacrifice fly.

Kluber, pegged to be Cleveland's No. 2 starter, allowed three runs and seven hits over 4 1/3 innings with two walks and five strikeouts.

"I felt really good," Kluber said. "I felt like for the most part my stuff was right where I needed it to be. There was a decent amount of soft contact, broken bats and things like that. In that second inning, I left a few balls up and there was also some fly balls that got caught in the wind. That's bound to happen."

"The second inning, he gave up some hits and some balls were hit pretty hard," Francona said. "But he came back in the third and fourth and, in the third inning, he threw six pitches, all strikes. Fourth inning, seven pitches, all strikes. And got them out. I thought that was really impressive.

Reds starter Mike Leake gave up one run and three hits over four innings with no walks and six strikeouts. In the fourth inning, Nick Swisher led off by hitting a home run to right field against Leake.

Following Leake was reliever Jonathan Broxton, who was making his spring debut after returning from August surgery to repair a torn flexor mass tendon. Broxton pitched a 1-2-3 fifth inning with a flyout, groundout and called third strike. Of his eight pitches, five were strikes.

"I felt good out there, no problems getting loose out there. Everything felt fine," Broxton said. "It's always great to get out there on the mound and try to help your team win. Today was one of those steps I had to take in getting back into game action."

Reds bullpen candidate Pedro Beato gave up two runs in the seventh. It started with a Chisenhall triple and Mike Aviles sacrifice fly. After back-to-back singles, Tyler Holt hit an RBI double to left field that made it a 3-3 game.

The game included a nine-minute stoppage when third-base umpire Brad Myers was struck in the groin by a Brandon Phillips line drive in the second inning taken off the field on a cart. There was also a one-minute break in the fifth inning when an out call at third base on a Phillips stolen base attempt was reviewed and overturned on video replay.

"I think everybody seems to be working together to get the play right," Francona said.

Up next: Zach McAllister, who was recently named the third starter by manager Terry Francona, is slated to start and log five innings when the Indians host the Giants on Tuesday in a 10:05 p.m. ET Cactus League tilt at Goodyear Ballpark. Also scheduled to pitch in the Tribe's lone night game of the spring are bullpen candidates Vinnie Pestano, Blake Wood, C.C. Lee and Scott Atchison.
