Blue Jays claim reliever Drake off waivers

November 27th, 2018

TORONTO -- The Blue Jays have claimed right-hander off waivers for the second time in less than a year.
Toronto officially claimed Drake on Monday night after he was designated for assignment by the Rays. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Blue Jays designated right-hander for assignment.
Drake made two appearances for the Blue Jays during the 2018 season. He was claimed off waivers on July 26 from the Angels, but his stint in Toronto was a short one after he allowed three runs over 1 2/3 innings. Drake was designated for assignment on July 30, and he later went on to appear in 19 games for the Twins, with whom he finished the season well, registering a 2.21 ERA.
The 31-year-old Drake has experienced a bit of everything over the last year. He appeared in the Major Leagues for five teams in 2018 and has been claimed off waivers five times, as well. The Massachusetts native is 5-6 with a 4.59 ERA over 137 1/3 career Major League innings.
Leiter joined Toronto in September after being claimed off waivers from the Phillies. He allowed 11 runs (10 earned) over 6 2/3 innings during his brief stint. The corresponding roster moves mean the Blue Jays' 40-man roster is full in advance of Friday's non-tender deadline.
