Trammell takes over after Gibson's knee surgery

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- D-backs manager Kirk Gibson was not at Salt River Fields on Tuesday for the team's light workout, and he may miss Wednesday's Cactus League game as well.

Gibson underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Tuesday. The knee had been giving him problems recently, particularly on the team's recent trip to Australia.

Bench coach Alan Trammell was in charge of Tuesday's workout and will manage the team in Gibson's absence.

Trammell said Gibson told him he would be back Wednesday, but that remains to be seen. Gibson will need to be on crutches for a time, so if he does make it down to the bench for games, it is unlikely he will go to the mound to make pitching changes.
