ATLANTA -- Mets catcher Travis d'Arnaud left Tuesday's 9-7 loss against the Braves in the sixth inning due to a sore right wrist -- the same wrist he injured in an April 19 game. But both he and manager Terry Collins downplayed the severity of the injury, offering hope that d'Arnaud can return to the lineup immediately.
"It just acted up," Collins said.
Initially, d'Arnaud bruised the wrist on a throw to second base against the Philles, striking Aaron Altherr's bat on his follow-through. He missed four games, pinch-hitting in all of them, before returning to the starting lineup last week.
When d'Arnaud lined a ball to right field in the fifth inning Tuesday, he "felt something funky" in the wrist, which had not bothered him in days. Kevin Plawecki took over on defense for d'Arnaud, who was hitting .203 with four home runs in 22 games.
"It just kind of flared up a bit during the game and it just wouldn't loosen up," d'Arnaud said. "So I said something."
Now 28 years old, d'Arnaud has not had a full, healthy season since his age-20 campaign in Class A ball. Among his maladies have been a herniated disk in his lower back, a torn left knee ligament, a concussion, a hyperextended right elbow and multiple broken bones.
