Swihart, Shaw power Red Sox over Pirates

March 9th, 2016

BRADENTON, Fla. -- Blake Swihart picked up three hits, Travis Shaw homered and top prospect Yoan Moncada made his Grapefruit League debut as the Red Sox beat the Pirates, 6-2, at McKechnie Field on Wednesday.
Swihart doubled with one out in the first inning, setting up Shaw's two-run shot to left off Pirates starter Ryan Vogelsong. Swihart doubled in another run off Vogelsong in the third inning, and Shaw drove in Swihart with a fifth-inning single to left field.
"Left-center field. That's me," Shaw said. "I fell behind 2-0 and was just looking for something out over the plate. It was middle away. I was looking to go that way. Things just kind of timed up right there."

Swihart drove in another run in the sixth, hitting a hard grounder down the third-base line. Dan Gamache stopped the ball but couldn't make a clean throw to first in time, allowing Ryan LaMarre to score. Pablo Sandoval tacked on an additional run in the sixth on a double to right field, his first hit of the spring.
Sandoval also made a sharp play at third base the previous inning, diving to stop a Cole Figueroa grounder, spinning and making a strong throw to Shaw at first base.
The Pirates' first run came in the second inning, when Starling Marte singled, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch by Joe Kelly.

Kelly allowed one run on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts over 2 1/3 innings. After a perfect Grapefruit League debut last week, Vogelsong surrendered three runs on four hits and two walks.
"You don't want to not pitch well, but you need to battle every once in a while," Vogelsong said. "I'd rather have it now and get it out of the way than the start before the season starts. I wasn't as crisp as I wanted to be, but I got a chance to grind through some innings."
Up next for the Pirates: After throwing two perfect innings in his Grapefruit League debut, Pirates left-hander Francisco Liriano will make his second start of the spring on Thursday as the Pirates travel south to face the Rays in Port Charlotte, Fla. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. ET. The game can be heard on a  free, exclusive webcast. Right-handers Jameson Taillon, Neftali Feliz, Jorge Rondon, Curtis Partch and Rob Scahill are also scheduled to pitch. Top prospect Tyler Glasnow, left-hander Kyle Lobstein and righty Wilfredo Boscan are slated to pitch in a "B" game against the Orioles on Thursday morning.
Up next for the Red Sox: Lefty ace David Price will make his Grapefruit League debut for his new team in Thursday's 1:05 p.m. ET home game against the Twins. Price will likely pitch three innings. Hanley Ramirez, Dustin Pedroia, David Ortiz and Xander Bogaerts should all be back in the lineup after resting the last two days. The game can be heard live on a free, exclusive webcast.
