BRADENTON, Fla. -- Travis Shaw's determination in Spring Training has been backed by the type of results he hopes can alter the current depth chart.
In Wednesday's 6-2 win over the Pirates, the left-handed-hitting Shaw went 2-for-3 with an opposite-field homer and an RBI single. He is 8-for-14 in Grapefruit League action.

"I was coming in here to obviously make this team, but not only make this team but maybe push for more and just kind of let my at-bats speak for themselves," Shaw said. "I'll try to continue what I've been doing this last week I guess and just try to ride it out the rest of Spring Training."
Shaw's natural position is first base, where Hanley Ramirez is projected to start. He can also play third, but Pablo Sandoval is the starter there. Left field could be an option at some point, as Shaw will get some reps there later in Spring Training. David Ortiz is the designated hitter for one final season.

Shaw will try to create at-bats by producing like he did last season, when he belted 13 homers in 226 at-bats.
Throughout this Spring Training, Red Sox manager John Farrell has preached the beauty of competition. And Shaw is relishing it.
"You know, the thing that stands out is when he got his opportunity last year, he produced," Farrell said. "He's doing it again. Depending on how things shake out as we get through camp, he's earning the right to get on the field and stay active. He's contributing. That's our job to make sure that he's getting semi-regular at-bats. He's earning them each game played. He's earning more and more."
