Cahill shaken up as D-backs fall to Indians
Arizona starter day to day after giving up five runs in 4 2/3 innings
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Right-hander Justin Masterson pitched four solid innings to help lead the Indians past the D-backs, 7-1, on Tuesday afternoon at Salt River Fields.
Masterson, who is expected to be Cleveland's Opening Day starter, did not allow a hit and extended his scoreless streak to eight innings, though he did struggle a bit with his command in hitting two batters and walking one.
"He was good," D-backs manager Kirk Gibson said of Masterson. "He's got a good sinker, threw the ball hard inside. He's a good pitcher."
The Indians grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second thanks to a sacrifice fly by David Adams.
Lonnie Chisenhall, who is battling with Carlos Santana for the starting job at third base, gave his chances a lift in the fourth when he smacked a two-run homer off Trevor Cahill to extend the Indians' lead to 3-0.
Cahill, who was named to start against the Dodgers on March 23 in Sydney, Australia, in the second regular-season game of the year, was forced to leave the game with two outs in the fifth inning.
Cahill appeared to land awkwardly on his right leg while covering first base on Jason Kipnis' groundout to first. The team said he sustained a jammed knee and was day to day.
Earlier in the inning, the Indians touched Cahill for another run on Asdrubal Cabrera's RBI double.
David Hernandez relieved Cahill, and Michael Brantley promptly drove in Cabrera to put the Indians up, 5-0, with all five runs credited to the D-backs' starter.
Arizona got on the board in the bottom of the inning when Matt Tuiasosopo singled in Martin Prado, but the Indians rounded out the game's scoring with two runs in the ninth.
Up next for the D-backs: The D-backs are scheduled to split up Wednesday, with a 1:05 p.m. MST contest against the Dodgers in Glendale and a 7:10 p.m. MST game against Rockies at Salt River Fields. The D-backs will start a Minor Leaguer in the game against the Dodgers, while Wade Miley will square off against the Rockies on both MLB.TV and an exclusive webcast.
