Plouffe ruled day to day with intercostal strain

MINNEAPOLIS -- Twins third baseman Trevor Plouffe exited Sunday's 3-2 walk-off win against the Angels in the 10th inning after suffering a strained right intercostal muscle. He's day to day, as the club will monitor him over the next few days before deciding whether he'll need to be placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Plouffe said he's been dealing with the injury for the last couple of days, but it didn't really start to bother him until the 10th inning. Plouffe was stranded at first base after a walk in the 10th, as Eddie Rosario flied out to center to end the inning. But as Plouffe was headed toward third base, he grabbed his side and walked off the field with trainer Dave Pruemer.
"It's not the worst thing in the world," Plouffe said. "I've felt some discomfort in there the last couple days, but it hasn't bothered me doing baseball stuff. And then I was jogging and I felt it grab a little bit. But even right now, I feel OK doing baseball stuff. So we'll give it a few days and hopefully the inflammation goes down."

Plouffe, who had an RBI double in the fourth, singled in both the sixth and eighth innings, and drew a leadoff walk in the 10th, going 3-for-4 on the day. He stretched his side during his at-bat in the sixth, which caught the eye of manager Paul Molitor, but Plouffe insisted he was OK and stayed in the game.
"I saw him stretching during a couple at-bats in the game, but I asked him and he said he was fine," Molitor said. "He just felt it when he took off on that particular play. We're going to try to give him some patience here and see how he responds the next day or two before we decide if we have to do anything."
Eduardo Escobar replaced Plouffe and moved over to shortstop with Eduardo Nunez going from short to third base. Nunez is expected to fill in for Plouffe in his absence. But Plouffe remains hopeful he won't be out long.
"I'd been feeling like a small bruising pain in there randomly," Plouffe said. "That's all I felt while I was stretching it out. But I hadn't really been feeling it too much swinging, throwing or running, but it just grabbed on me jogging. It's just one of those freak things."
