NEW YORK -- The Rockies and their fans can breathe a little easier as shortstop Trevor Story's injury during Saturday's 7-2 win over the Mets turned out to be just a jammed left thumb. It could have been worse.
Story, the National League record holder for home runs by a rookie shortstop with 27, actually hurt the thumb twice, in different ways, in the fourth inning.
Story jammed the thumb when he slid into second base in the top of the frame. On an infield single, he tried to take second on an errant throw from Mets shortstop Asdrúbal Cabrera, but was thrown out by first baseman Kelly Johnson. Story left the game after landing on it when he dove unsuccessfully for Justin Ruggiano's one-out single in the fourth.

But X-rays were negative. Head athletic trainer Keith Dugger said the club will check with Story on Sunday morning and hope that there isn't unusual overnight swelling. It's unlikely Story -- who was replaced on Saturday by Cristhian Adames -- will start Sunday, when the Rockies attempt to sweep the four-game series at Citi Field, but he could be available if swelling doesn't occur. The Rockies are off on Monday before beginning a three-game set against the Dodgers on Tuesday night at Coors Field.
"It's going to be sore, but X-rays were negative, which is good," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "It's too soon, but the fact that the X-rays were negative is a good thing."
Story was not available to the media after the game.
Story, 23, who debuted with two home runs on Opening Night, surpassed the NL rookie shortstop record of 24 homers by former Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki in 2007. Nomar Garciaparra set the Major League rookie shortstop record with 30 in 1997.
Story is one homer behind the franchise rookie record, set by catcher Wilin Rosario in 2012.
Story was making his 97th appearance and 94th start at shortstop. At the time of the injury, which occurred with the Rockies leading, 3-2, Story was hitting .272 with 72 RBIs.
