Trio of Angels relievers set for extended spring

ANAHEIM -- When the Angels depart on a six-game road trip through Detroit and Houston, a trio of injured relievers will report to Arizona for treatment.

Sean Burnett (left elbow impingement), Robert Coello (right shoulder inflammation) and Ryan Madson (recovering from Tommy John surgery) will all go to extended spring camp to continue their rehab.

"It's better for them, which is ultimately better for us," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said.

Burnett, a left-hander, and Coello, a right-hander, will simply receive treatment. Neither is expected to throw a baseball for "a while," according to Scioscia.

While in Arizona, Madson will continue to play catch off of flat ground. It still remains to be seen when he will get back on a mound.

Since his Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in April 2012, Madson's recovery has taken a plethora of twists and turns.

Although the Angels still have a glimmer of hope, Scioscia admitted that Madson may not pitch for the club in 2013.

"As the calendar turns, it becomes more of a possibility," Scioscia said. "I know Ryan's frustrated. It's definitely frustrating for us, especially since he was virtually ready -- so close. One more tuneup rehab start and he never got to that rehab start; he was shut down."
