ANAHEIM -- Angels outfielder Mike Trout sustained a right thumb contusion after being hit by a pitch in the eighth inning of Sunday's 8-3 loss to the Indians.
X-rays were negative on Trout's thumb, and the former MVP was back in the lineup at desigated hitter on Monday vs. the Twins.
"I'm just glad it's not broken," Trout said. "When you're hit in the hand or you're hit in the finger, it's a scary thing."
Trout, leading off the eighth with the Angels down, 6-1, was hit on a 2-1, 93-mph two-seam fastball located high and inside from Tommy Hunter. Trout immediately reacted and began shaking his hand, making it a few steps out of the batter's box before a trainer came out to check on him. He was replaced as a pinch-runner by Shane Robinson.
Trout said the pitch came in on him and in his attempt to get out of the way, his right thumb flipped up off the bat. The pitch grazed the inside of the thumb, just hitting the joint and causing him to lose feeling in his hand. He regained feeling when he got back to the clubhouse.
Trout was 1-for-1 with two walks on the day. He's hitting .309 with 13 homers, 44 RBIs and nine steals, and is leading all American League outfielders in votes for the All-Star Game.
