Gosewisch ready to battle for backup spot

Catcher says he's '100 percent ready to go' as first workouts begin

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- D-backs catcher Tuffy Gosewisch realized early Thursday morning just how excited he was for the first official pitcher/catcher workouts.
"It was easy to wake up today," Gosewisch said. "I woke up at about 5 a.m. with no alarm. I was just up and ready to go."

After a nine-year Minor League odyssey, Gosewisch found himself as the Opening Day starter for the D-backs in 2015. However, his season came to a screeching halt when he tore the ACL in his left knee on May 27 in St. Louis.

"I'm 100 percent ready to go," said Gosewisch, who missed the rest of 2015 following the injury. "I've been doing everything -- catching, hitting, throwing, running bases, and haven't had any setbacks. There are no limitations. It's all been good."
Welington Castillo has been penciled in as the starter behind the plate with Gosewisch battling for the backup role.
"It's just tough to get Tuffy off the team because he's so well liked as a catcher," D-backs manager Chip Hale said. "Guys love to throw to him."
