Twice is nice: Ryan hits ball two times on one swing

NEW YORK -- Brendan Ryan seems to have mastered the redirection. The Yankees infielder singled Thursday on a ball that made contact with his bat twice.

Facing the Tigers' Rick Porcello in the third inning, Ryan was jammed by an inside fastball that first struck the handle of his bat, then was caught by the barrel as Ryan completed the follow-through on his swing.

The end result was a ball with extra topspin that jumped past third baseman Nick Castellanos into left field. Ryan was erased on the basepaths when Brett Gardner hit into an inning-ending double play.
