The Twins placed left-handed reliever Glen Perkins on the 60-day disabled list with a left posterior shoulder strain, one of a series of moves the club announced Sunday as part of its finalized Opening Day roster.
Minnesota also selected the contract of catcher Chris Gimenez to serve as the backup and optioned first baseman Kennys Vargas to solidify the team's 25-man roster. The Twins are keeping 13 pitchers, two catchers, five infielders and five outfielders on the active roster going into Monday's season-opening game against the Royals.
Perkins is coming off labrum surgery, a procedure he underwent in June that limited him to just two games in 2016. In his last full season with the Twins in 2015, the 34-year-old went 3-5 with a 3.32 ERA and 32 saves in 60 appearances.
Gimenez, signed by the Twins in January, hit .216 with four home runs and 11 RBIs in 68 games for the Indians last season.
Vargas has played three Major League seasons, all with the Twins. The 26-year-old hit .230 with 10 homers and 20 RBIs in 47 games for Minnesota in 2016.
