SAN DIEGO -- Hard-throwing reliever J.T. Chargois is enjoying a breakout season in the Minor Leagues that already saw him get his first taste of the Majors, and, on Sunday, he had the opportunity to join some of baseball's best prospects at the Sirius XM All-Star Futures Game.
Chargois entered in the top of the ninth, with the US Team trailing, 4-3. He walked one and allowed two hits before being replaced. All three runners would come around to score as the World Team posted a seven-run inning en route to an 11-3 victory.
The Futures Game appearance was a first for Chargois, who is ranked as Minnesota's No. 8 prospect by MLBPipleine.com. Sunday's results were quite in contrast to the numbers Chargois has posted in the Minors this year. The right-hander, whose fastball can reach triple digits, has combined to notch a 1.49 ERA with 47 strikeouts and 10 walks in 36 1/3 innings between Double-A Chattanooga and Triple-A Rochester.
"I'm happy that they chose him because he's one of our better guys," Twins general manager Terry Ryan said. "They always like to see those radar guns lit up in those Futures Games and he can do that. But just as important, he's a guy we're hoping will be a part of our future here. This is a nice reward. He's on the right track."

Chargois was called up by the Twins last month, but his Major League debut was one to forget. The right-hander gave up five runs on five hits and two walks while recording two outs against the Red Sox on June 11. He was optioned back to Rochester the next day.

Chargois, though, has pitched well since being sent back down, posting a 2.19 ERA with 13 strikeouts in 12 1/3 innings with Rochester.

"We need to get him settled down here," Ryan said. "It's control and command. When we brought him, the control wasn't too good and neither was command. But he was nervous. It's as simple as that. But once he settles down, he'll be OK. I wish it didn't turn out the way it did because it wasn't a pleasant first experience for him, but that happens to a few of them."

Chargois, a second-round pick out of Rice University in the 2012 Draft, has a career 2.06 ERA with 122 strikeouts in 100 1/3 innings in the Minors. He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2013, missing both the '13 and '14 seasons before returning last year.

"The reports on him have been solid in terms of development the last few years," Twins manager Paul Molitor said. "Everyone knows he's knocking on the door. He's got high-end ability."
