Sano, who is hitting .267/.356/.514 with a team-leading 28 homers and 77 RBIs in 111 games, said he first felt the pain in his shin on Friday, when he hit two homers. He made three plate appearances in Saturday's game before coming out due to discomfort.

"It's tough to make up for," Twins manager Paul Molitor said. "We're aware we're missing a big bat in our lineup. So we'll give guys at-bats and opportunities to hit in more significant roles, if you will. But they still have to be themselves. We're just hoping Miggy has a good week while we're on the road getting back in shape and that we can potentially get him back sooner than later."

As Molitor noted, Sano didn't travel with the Twins for their five-game series against the White Sox, and he will rehab in Minnesota. The club is hopeful he could return within 10 days, but it will have to see how his shin responds in the next few days.

"I would think the fact it intensified in a short period that the reverse of that can be true," Molitor said. "But it's something about how when he returns it's something we'll have to continue to look at. We might have to DH him more. Those types of things."

Vargas rejoins the Twins after being optioned Aug. 10. Vargas has been called up five times this season and is hitting .243/.289/.429 with eight homers and 30 RBIs in 51 games. He's expected to see time at first base and DH with Eduardo Escobar and Ehire Adrianza to see action at third in Sano's absence.

Worth noting

• Twins players and coaches watched the total solar eclipse on the field before the game, getting equipped with special glasses to avoid hurting their eyes. Molitor watched with his players, but he said it wasn't his first one. So it didn't exactly blow his mind.

"It didn't electrify me," Molitor said with a smile.

• Injured left-handers Hector Santiago (upper back strain) and Adalberto Mejia (biceps) are both scheduled to throw bullpen sessions this week. Santiago will throw Wednesday and Mejia will throw Thursday. They'll both make at least one more rehab start before returning in September.
