CHICAGO -- After Monday's doubleheader that saw Tim Melville start Game 1 and Dillon Gee start in Game 2, the Twins decided on Tuesday to go with Gee as their fifth starter, designating Melville for assignment after their 4-1 win over the White Sox. A corresponding roster move is coming Wednesday, and, according to a Major League source, it'll be reliever John Curtiss, the club's No. 19 prospect, per MLBPipeline.com.
Gee outpitched Melville on Monday, allowing one run over six innings in a 10-2 win, while Melville was charged with five runs over 3 1/3 innings in a 7-6 loss. But Gee has been valuable in long relief, which made it a difficult decision, Twins manager Paul Molitor said. Gee's next start will come Saturday in Toronto.
"Melville got an opportunity but we're going to go with Dillon," Molitor said. "It's tough. Melville had to fight his way up and one look isn't the fairest way to go about it. But sometimes tough situations mean tough choices."

Gee has been solid in five appearances with the Twins this season, posting a 1.93 ERA with 16 strikeouts and two walks in 18 2/3 innings. He said he's fine with whatever role the Twins have for him, but cautioned that historically he's tended to lose effectiveness if he bounces around too much between roles.
"I like to start, but I like the bullpen, too," Gee said before he was named the fifth starter. "The only thing I've expressed to these guys that in the past I've been bounced back and forth a bit and sometimes my consistency lapses when that happens. But when I get a start, I'm going to go back out there and do the best I can for the team. So I definitely feel I can be a starter, but I'd prefer it to be for a longer term."
Kyle Gibson solidified his spot in the rotation in the short-term with his strong performance against the White Sox, allowing one run over seven innings. Right-hander Aaron Slegers, a candidate to take Gibson's spot after he fared well in his Major League debut on Thursday, struggled with Triple-A Rochester, allowing four runs over 3 1/3 innings on Tuesday.
