Hughes, Schafer and Fien exit with injuries

MINNEAPOLIS -- Twins right-hander Phil Hughes, center fielder Jordan Schafer and reliever Casey Fien all exited Wednesday's 10-7 loss to the Tigers due to injury, but manager Paul Molitor said the club remains hopeful all three injuries are minor.

Hughes left after the fifth with a minor left hip flexor strain, while Schafer exited in the sixth with a mild MCL sprain in his right knee and Fien left with right shoulder soreness in the ninth.

"All of the guys involved, we're hoping for a good result in the short-term," Twins manager Paul Molitor said. "Day-to-day types of things. Hughes' hip flared up on him a little bit, but he's optimistic he can stay on schedule and throw his side in a couple days to get ready for his next start. Schafer, his knee is bothering him, and we'll get it tested out, but he said after the game he's fine and ready to play [Thursday]. Casey's shoulder is a little bit tender, so we're going to make sure we're on top of that and get it checked out."

Hughes gave up three runs on seven hits and left with a four-run lead after throwing 71 pitches. He said his hip started to bother him Saturday, the day after his last start, and got worse as the game went along, but that he hopes to make his next start.

"It's just something that got progressively worse as the game went on," Hughes said. "I couldn't really finish anything. I just didn't want it to get so bad I would miss significant time. So I'll try to throw a bullpen in a few days and move around [Thursday] and see where we're at with it."

After Hughes departed, the bullpen couldn't hold the lead, handing the right-hander a no-decision. He finishes April going 0-4 with a 4.55 ERA.

Once Hughes departed, reliever Tim Stauffer promptly gave up solo shots to Miguel Cabrera and J.D. Martinez before left-hander Aaron Thompson came in and served up a game-tying two-run inside-the-park home run to Tigers catcher James McCann.

Schafer couldn't make the play on McCann's inside-the-parker, and was lifted from the game in the sixth after reaching on a bunt single down the first-base line. He was diagnosed with a right knee MCL sprain suffered while slipping near first base after the single, and was replaced by Shane Robinson. Schafer is day to day, but said he believes he'd be fine to play Thursday.

"It just kind of gave out on me and kind of locked, but after walking around the training room, I feel fine," Schafer said. "It doesn't feel any worse. We'll see how it feels [Thursday], but I'm pretty sure I'll be fine."

Fien was the last to leave the game, exiting in the middle of an at-bat with Victor Martinez with nobody out in the ninth after giving up a two-run blast to Cabrera. Fien declined comment after the game, but will have his shoulder checked out further Thursday.
