Twins rained out, to play split twin bill Wednesday

BOSTON -- Fresh off a wildly successful May, the Twins received an unexpected day of rest as the calendar turned to June.

Monday night's game against the Red Sox was postponed because of "moderate to heavy" rain showers forecasted around Fenway Park throughout the evening, the teams announced. The game will instead be made up at 12:35 p.m. CT on Wednesday as part of a split-admission, day-night doubleheader. The Red Sox expect Tuesday night's game to take place as scheduled.

Those with tickets for Monday night's game can gain admission to Wednesday afternoon's rescheduled game. The gates will open at 12:05 p.m.

Right-hander Mike Pelfrey, who had been penciled in to pitch on Monday, will now start on Tuesday and face Clay Buchholz in the de facto series opener. Beyond that, the Twins have not yet settled on how their rotation plans will change with the altered schedule.

Right-hander Phil Hughes could feasibly pitch one of Wednesday's games, although he would be doing so on extended rest. As for the other game, the Twins have a few options they could consider, including pitching Trevor May on regular rest, using long-relief man J.R. Graham or potentially calling up a starter from Triple-A Rochester.

Because the doubleheader was scheduled more than 48 hours in advance, the Twins are permitted to temporarily add a 26th player to the active roster on Wednesday.

The club also needs to determine how it plans to address starter Ricky Nolasco, who underwent an MRI after exiting Sunday's 6-5 win over the Blue Jays with a right ankle injury. If each member of the Minnesota rotation has his start pushed back one day, Nolasco would be slated to throw on Friday against the Brewers.
