FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Twins trimmed their roster by six on Saturday, leaving 13 position players in camp, which means that part of their roster is essentially set after veteran outfielder Carlos Quentin was reassigned to Minor League camp.
The Twins also reassigned catcher Juan Centeno, infielder James Beresford, outfielder Darin Mastroianni and lefty reliever Dan Runzler. Catcher John Hicks was optioned to Triple-A Rochester. The moves leave 29 players in camp, so the Twins have four more cuts to make before they head to Washington D.C. for two exhibition games next weekend and then open the season against the Orioles in Baltimore on April 4. Beresford, Mastroianni and Centeno will also be on the trip to D.C. as depth options despite being told they won't make the club.
Barring injury, Minnesota's bench will be composed of outfielder Oswaldo Arcia, catcher John Ryan Murphy and utility men Eduardo Nunez and Danny Santana. Arcia and Santana are both out of Minor League options and made the roster.
Given his versatility, Santana was always considered a strong candidate to make the team, but Arcia had to compete with Quentin, who had a hot start despite not playing in 2015 before cooling off. Arcia helped his cause this week, launching two homers against the Marlins on Thursday.
"He came in good shape and had things to prove," Twins general manager Terry Ryan said of Arcia. "He did a better job this spring on defense with his throwing and routes. But we're mostly keeping him for his bat and his power. But now he has the opportunity to take those at-bats and show it was the right decision for us."

Quentin hit .250/.333/.500 with two homers and seven RBIs in 15 games. He has a June 1 out-clause in his contract, and he is expected to take a day or two before deciding if he'll accept the assignment to Rochester.
"He was disappointed as you could well imagine, but I think he was appreciative of the opportunity," Ryan said. "We still haven't decided on his fate here. He's going to take a day or so to decide what he wants to do. But we gave him a chance to play at Triple-A. He was disappointed he didn't make the club, so I didn't want him to have to make a decision on the spot."
The moves also leave 16 pitchers, including non-roster invitees Fernando Abad, Logan Darnell and Brandon Kintzler. Of the three, Abad has the best shot of making the club. The Twins currently have only one spot open on their 40-man roster.
The look of the bullpen will be determined in part by whether Tyler Duffey or Ricky Nolasco makes the rotation. If Duffey is in the rotation, Nolasco would head to the bullpen, while if Nolasco is the fifth starter, Duffey would head to Triple-A. Tommy Milone still hasn't been announced as a starter, but he figures to be in the rotation with an impressive spring.
"We've got a good issue on our hands," Ryan said. "Our rotation is in good order. We have a decision to make it, but that's not a bad thing."
Closer Glen Perkins, Kevin Jepsen, Trevor May and Casey Fien are the four locks for the bullpen, leaving Ryan Pressly, Michael Tonkin, Ryan O'Rourke, Abad, Darnell and Kintzler to compete for the final spots. Pressly and Abad are both strong candidates to make the club, while Tonkin is out of options.
