"He needs to trust the fact he has an above-average fastball," manager Paul Molitor said. "If he puts that fastball in a good place, he's going to work ahead more times than not. It's just going to make him that much better."

The move was necessary after the Twins optioned righty Alex Wimmers following Monday's 14-3 loss to the Mariners. The Twins used four different players in relief, including catcher Chris Gimenez.

"I told [Pressly] today, the way that we are, and the fact some guys are down here, you just have to be ready any time the phone rings," Molitor said. "Could be early in the game."

Worth noting

• Left-hander Hector Santiago threw long toss on Tuesday, and is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Thursday. He remains a "long shot" to start in Saturday's doubleheader against the Indians, according to Molitor.

• During Monday's simulated game, lefty Glen Perkins' velocity was between 85-89 mph. He is scheduled to throw another simulated game on Friday. Perkins has not appeared in a game since April 10, 2016.

• The Twins announced updates for injured right-handers Justin Haley and Phil Hughes on Tuesday. Haley threw long toss, while Hughes began his throwing program. Haley will throw a bullpen session on Friday.
