MINNEAPOLIS -- The Twins are set to hire Indians assistant general manager Derek Falvey as their new president of baseball operations, according to a Major League source.
The Twins, however, have not confirmed the hiring of Falvey, who has been with Cleveland since 2007. A source familiar with the Twins' search said the "process is still ongoing." The Twins are also expected to hire a general manager who will report to Falvey.
Falvey, who is known for his work in player development and helping the Indians build one of the best rotations in baseball, emerged as the favorite over other candidates, including interim general manager Rob Antony, Cubs senior vice president of player development Jason McLeod, Royals assistant general manager of player personnel J.J. Picollo and Rays vice president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom.
Falvey has been Cleveland's assistant general manager for a year, and the 32-year-old previously served as director of baseball operations for four years. In his current role, he has assisted in all areas of baseball operations, including contracts and statistical work. He also was involved in the acquisition and development of amateur and professional players.
Currently, the youngest general manager in MLB is Milwaukee's David Stearns, who is 31.
One of Falvey's main roles has been overseeing the Indians' advanced scouting department, and he has worked closely with manager Terry Francona to disseminate relevant information to the Major League coaching staff on a daily basis.
Falvey represents a departure from Minnesota's old-school ways, as he's well-versed in analytics and graduated from Trinity College with an economics degree in 2005. He also pitched at Trinity.
Antony is currently serving as the Twins' interim GM after longtime GM Terry Ryan was let go in July.
