MINNEAPOLIS -- Twins third baseman Trevor Plouffe on Tuesday was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right intercostal muscle, retroactive to Monday.
Plouffe said he had been dealing with the injury for a few days, but it worsened while he was running the bases in the 10th inning of Sunday's 3-2 win over the Angels. Plouffe is hitting .302/.333/.535 with two homers and six RBIs in 12 games.
Infielder Jorge Polanco, who is ranked as the Twins' No. 5 prospect and the No. 95 overall prospect by MLBPipeline.com, was recalled from Triple-A Rochester to take Plouffe's spot on the active roster.

The Twins begin a five-game Interleague road trip through Milwaukee and Washington on Wednesday, and manager Paul Molitor wanted to have a full bench of position players because of National League rules.
"We're heading into Interleague with games on the road, so we'll have to have players available," said Molitor.
With Plouffe out, Eduardo Nunez started at third on Monday, and he is expected to be a regular there in Plouffe's absence. Miguel Sano took grounders at third before the game, but it was in case of an emergency situation, as Molitor said they still view Sano as a right fielder.
"I don't really want to go there," Molitor said. "But with Danny [Santana] going down as my utility man and Nunez in the lineup, it puts us in a bit of a precarious situation."
