OAKLAND -- A two-run sixth-inning single by Yonder Alonso helped the A's beat the Mariners 6-3 on Friday night at the Coliseum, snapping Seattle's six-game winning streak.
The A's scored three times and strung together five straight hits to begin the bottom of the sixth inning, including Alonso's two-run single to right field, knocking Seattle starter Joe Wieland out of the game. Wieland, who was summoned from Triple-A just hours before the game to make a spot start, allowed singles to Marcus Semien, Stephen Vogt and Khris Davis to begin the inning, setting up Alonso. Danny Valencia followed with an RBI single.
"One bad pitch, the change to Alfonso," Wieland said. "I left the ball up a little. I get down and he swings through it and it's a different inning." More >
A's starter Sean Manaea won for the fourth time this season, allowing three runs in six innings. He briefly flirted with a no-hit bid until Kyle Seager hit his 22nd homer of the season with two outs in the fifth inning. Seattle added two more in the top of the sixth, spurred by an RBI triple from Shawn O'Malley that eluded a diving Jake Smolinski in center, to draw even at 3-3.

"He battled," A's manager Bob Melvin said of Manaea. "These are the type of learning experiences for young pitchers that is good for them."
The A's scored also three runs in the first inning off Wieland, including Davis' career-high 28th homer, a two-run shot to right.
"Nobody hits the ball down the right field line like that as a right-handed hitter," Melvin said. "And really [he] doesn't even get it. Guys just don't do that. His opposite field power is similar to a guy like [Miguel] Cabrera."
Oakland's bullpen threw three scoreless innings of relief, capped by Ryan Madson's 25th save. The A's have now won four of their last five games. Seattle, which had won eight of its last 10 games prior to Friday, is now two games out of the final Wild Card spot in the American League.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Alonso comes through: Alonso was the victim of tough luck in the first, scorching a liner to right field that was caught by Franklin Gutierrez. The Mariners weren't as fortunate in the sixth inning, as Alonso's grounder found the hole between first and second base and plated Semien and Vogt to take the lead. Alonso now has eight RBIs in his last 11 games, and is hitting .361 over that span.
"I'm just trying to stay consistent and make sure I get my work in as much as possible," Alonso said. "Just continuing to be there for my guys at the plate." More >
Breaking up not so hard: Seager drilled a line drive over the right field fence with two outs in the top of the fifth inning to give the Mariners their first run and first hit. Until then, not many Mariners were able to make solid contact. Seager's solo shot was his 36th two-out RBI of the season, second-most in the Major Leagues behind only Cleveland's Mike Napoli's 38.
"We got down early and didn't do enough offensively," Mariners manager Scott Servais said.

Fast start in the first: The A's are plenty used to calling on inexperienced starters recently, and appeared to enjoy being on the opposite side for a change. Two batters in, Semien roped a single to left and Vogt followed with an RBI double to right. Davis finished off the sudden barrage, muscling his 28th homer of the season to short right field for a two-run shot, and the A's had a 3-0 lead after four batters.
"He's out of control," Alonso said of Davis. "He's been our most productive hitter for power. He's a guy that every single day he can wow you, not only in batting practice but in the game. He's a guy that comes ready to play every single day."

O'Malley's mark: O'Malley collected two of the Mariners four hits, including a run-scoring triple.
"All of his at-bats are competitive," Servais said. "He can fill a lot of roles. He's gone a great job for us."

Athletics:Kendall Graveman (8-7, 4.29) starts Saturday at 6:05 p.m. PT against the Mariners at the Coliseum. Graveman's been Oakland's most consistent pitcher, going 7-1 with a 3.67 ERA over his last 13 starts, and is the only starter who has remained in the rotation all season long. He won his last start, allowing one run in seven innings to the Orioles Monday at home.
