Chatwood throws, won't play for Rox in '15

DENVER -- Right-hander Tyler Chatwood pitched in a competitive baseball game on Wednesday night for the first time in more than 16 months, but manager Walt Weiss confirmed on Thursday that Chatwood will not pitch with the Rockies this season.

Chatwood, who is working his way back from a second Tommy John surgery, threw two innings with Class A Advanced Modesto, yielding three hits and a run with two walks and one strikeout. He threw 42 pitches, 25 of them in the first inning.

"All reports said the ball was coming out really well," Weiss said before Thursday's series opener with the Giants. "He was 93 to 96 [mph]. Got extended the first inning. He gave up a homer [in the second], so the results weren't [great]. But he's coming off a second Tommy John surgery. First time he's been in competition in a very long time.

"Most important thing is that he was throwing the ball really well. So [we're] very encouraged by his outing."

Although he won't pitch in Denver this season, Chatwood will make one more rehab appearance with Modesto, likely on Saturday or Sunday. The Nuts' season ends on Monday.

Worth noting:

• In his quest to return from two non-displaced rib fractures -- as well as an ongoing battle with plantar fasciitis -- outfielder Corey Dickerson began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Albuquerque on Wednesday. He went 1-for-4 as a designated hitter.

Weiss said that it's "very possible" Dickerson will play for the Rockies again this season.

• David Hale was officially recalled on Thursday and joined Colorado's relief corps. The Rockies now have 14 men in their bullpen.
