BOSTON -- The Red Sox optioned infielder Tzu-Wei Lin and reliever Austin Maddox after Sunday night's 3-0 win over the Yankees in preparation to activate starter Eduardo Rodriguez for his start Monday against the Blue Jays.
Rodriguez has been on the disabled list since suffering a right knee subluxation on June 1. The left-hander went 0-1 with a 4.35 ERA in two rehab starts for Triple-A Pawtucket.
Brock Holt, who was the 26th man for the doubleheader against the Yankees on Sunday, will stay on the active roster. Holt went 1-for-5 in his first two games back on Sunday -- he had been on the DL since April 21 due to symptoms of vertigo.
The roster shift ends Lin's first Major League stint. The utility infielder, who is the second Taiwanese player to suit up for the Red Sox, was called up from Double-A Portland on June 24 and made an impression in his first go at the big leagues. Lin hit .291 in 18 games for Boston and provided a steady glove in a time of defensive turmoil at third base.
The future may still be bright for the 23-year-old, as Red Sox manager John Farrell said the consistent play of Lin and third baseman Deven Marrero gave the team enough confidence to designate Pablo Sandoval for assignment earlier in the week.
Maddox's stretch with the Red Sox lasted just one day, but the righty threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief in the Game 1 loss during Sunday's doubleheader.
