Umpire exits after being hit by foul tip

May 22nd, 2016

SAN DIEGO -- Home-plate umpire David Rackley was struck in the groin by a foul ball in the fifth inning of Sunday's 17-inning, 9-5 Dodgers win over the Padres and exited the game.
Rackley was hit by a failed bunt attempt by Dodgers center fielder Joc Pederson, and the umpire immediately fell to the ground. He remained on the dirt behind home plate for about five minutes as he was attended to by the Padres' training staff.
After being helped to his feet, Rackley was able to leave under his own power. On his way out, he handed a young fan a baseball as it was clear Rackley's day behind the plate was done.
Rackley, who has been umpiring in the Majors since August 2010, was replaced by second-base umpire Alfonso Marquez as a three-man crew was utilized. There was a delay of 15 minutes between pitches.
Rackley will be evaluated before the crew's next assignment on Tuesday.
