NEW YORK -- Home-plate umpire Hunter Wendelstedt exited Monday's series opener between the Yankees and Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium after taking a foul ball to his face mask in the bottom of the second inning.
Yankees athletic trainer Steve Donohue came out to check on Wendelstedt after he was hit by a Brian McCann foul ball, but Wendelstedt finished off the inning. Wendelstedt did not come back out for the third, though. Second-base umpire Scott Barry replaced Wendelstedt at home and the game continued without a second-base umpire. New York won the game, 1-0.
"I knew that he was having issues," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "He had a headache. My guess is he has a concussion. I give Scott Barry a lot of credit because he had to get ready really quickly. We were expecting 10 minutes. But we knew that he was kind of in trouble."
