Valverde out, Farnsworth in as Mets closer

Kyle Farnsworth will take over as Mets closer, replacing fellow veteran reliver Jose Valverde, manager Terry Collins said before Sunday's game against the Braves.

Valverde took over as closer after incumbent Bobby Parnell was lost for the season with a partially torn MCL in his right elbow. After pitching six scoreless outings to open the season, Valverde has been hit hard over his last three appearances, allowing eight runs (five earned) on eight hits over three innings.

Farnsworth, who was signed to a Minor League deal at the end of Spring Training, has a 1.23 ERA in eight appearances, allowing an earned run on six hits over 7 1/3 innings.
