PEORIA, Ariz. -- Veteran right-hander Philip Humber has informed the Padres that he's retiring from baseball, manager Andy Green said on Tuesday morning, hours before his club met the Dodgers in their last home game of the spring at Peoria Stadium.
Humber made the decision after he was informed on Monday that he would not make the team, Green said. Humber's decision didn't surprise Green.
"Honestly, on this one, no," Green said. "He's a guy that I appreciate the depth of character he possesses, the quality of person he is, and also the guy's pitched a perfect game in the Major Leagues. It's not his only career highlight, but he's had a great career."

Humber, 33, was in camp as a non-roster player. He tossed his perfect game for the White Sox in a 4-0 win in Seattle over the Mariners on April 21, 2012. Humber was 16-23 with a 5.31 ERA in parts of eight seasons for the Mets, Twins, Royals, White Sox and Astros.
Most recently, Humber was 0-8 with a 7.90 ERA in 17 games last year for Houston.
This spring in Padres camp, he made six appearances (one start), allowing five earned runs on nine hits with four walks and six strikeouts.
Humber had made it clear early this spring that he might move on if he didn't make the Padres.
"He knew that if it wasn't his job at the Major League level, he was ready," Green said. "He made that clear and I asked him if he wanted 24 hours to think about it before declaring that and he said, 'No. I know where I am right now.' I completely support him and wish him well."
Humber is the second Padres player to retire during this camp. The other was veteran infielder Skip Schumaker.
"I'm driving people away, I guess," joked Green, the club's first-year manager. "I'm not what they're looking for."
In another move, Green also said that right-hander Jon Edwards would open the season on the disabled list because of a flexor strain in his right forearm.
Edwards made seven appearances in relief this spring, allowing six hits and four earned runs with four walks and eight strikeouts. He hasn't pitched in a game since March 19.
"The good news is it's just muscular, he has a flexor strain," Green said. "We're just going to slow him down to no throwing for a couple of weeks and then build him back up so he'll be part of what we're doing moving forward."
Edwards was obtained by the Padres last Aug. 21 as the player to be named later when Will Venable was traded to the Rangers. He made 11 relief appearances in San Diego and had a 3.38 ERA.
