Vlad gets first day off since storming onto scene

ANAHEIM -- For the first time since his callup, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was out of the starting lineup for Thursday’s series finale at Angel Stadium.

According to manager Charlie Montoyo, the Blue Jays always intended this to be an off-day for Guerrero, who missed three weeks during Spring Training with an oblique injury. Other Blue Jays hitters are also scheduled for rest days, as the club is in the middle of a six-game road trip without a day off.

“Honestly, [Guerrero is] kind of going through Spring Training right now, because he missed so many games, and that’s why he’s not in the lineup today,” Montoyo told MLB Network Radio. “[We] gave him a day off to relax a little bit, and then he’ll probably play the next [three] days on the road. He needs at-bats, he needs to get in shape, and he will.”

Through his first five career games in the Majors, Guerrero is 3-for-18 with a double, three walks and six strikeouts. He was hitless in six at-bats in the first two games of the series against the Angels. Montoyo emphasized that the rookie third baseman is not being negatively affected by all of the attention he’s received.

“This kid, he just loves playing the game, and this stuff doesn’t bother him,” said Montoyo. “He’s fine. So cool and collected.”

Guerrero was available to pinch-hit on Thursday, though Montoyo noted that given the Angels’ lack of left-handers in the bullpen, there likely wouldn’t be a need to use him. Brandon Drury was in Guerrero’s No. 5 spot in the lineup and playing third base.

Two prospects promoted

Right-handed pitcher Nate Pearson and catcher Riley Adams were promoted to Double-A New Hampshire, the Blue Jays announced on Thursday.

Pearson, ranked by MLB Pipeline as the Blue Jays' top pitching prospect and No. 72 prospect in baseball, allowed two earned runs in 21 innings (0.86 ERA) in six starts for Class A Advanced Dunedin, with 35 strikeouts compared to two walks.

Adams, the Blue Jays’ No. 30 prospect, batted .295/.456/.492 with three home runs in 18 games (79 plate appearances) for Dunedin.
