BALTIMORE -- Orioles starter Wade Miley exited Friday night's 4-2 win over the White Sox in the first inning after being hit with consecutive two-out line drives. From the first comebacker, Miley was diagnosed with a bruised left wrist.
"I should have taken him out after the first one. I regret that," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said of Miley, who was hit in the rear end on the second liner. "Just didn't like the risk-reward there. The X-ray here [on his wrist] was negative, but we didn't take an X-ray of his buttocks."
Miley was first struck in the left wrist by Jose Abreu's line-drive single that was hit 103.3 mph, according to Statcast™. The southpaw stayed in the game after testing out a few pitches. But that didn't last long as the next batter, Avisail Garcia, hit a ball that bounced off Miley's behind to second baseman Jonathan Schoop for another single. Garcia's liner was 102.1 mph, per Statcast™.

"I think I'm fine," said Miley, who threw just 12 pitches before Gabriel Ynoa entered the game. "I kind of wanted to stay out there, but I guess they were kind of nervous about how many more were going to come my way."
"I haven't seen it happen back-to-back like that," White Sox manager Rick Renteria said. "That was unique. ... I hope he's OK, though."
Miley didn't anticipate missing any time and said he hoped to play catch Saturday.
"You don't want that to happen," said White Sox starter Miguel Gonzalez, who opposed Miley on Friday. "You don't want to see that. No matter if it's your opponent, you don't want anyone to get hurt. It's sad to see Miley go out in the first inning. And then Ynoa came in and did the job by pitching six innings."

The bizarre line-drive sequence was the latest in a crazy week for Baltimore, which has shuffled around its pitching to try to cover for Kevin Gausman, who was ejected in the second inning of Wednesday's game. The O's, who optioned Thursday's emergency starter Tyler Wilson before Friday's game, have had just one "normal start" of at least five innings by a regular rotation member in their past five games.
"Has that ever happened before? Three pitches, two licks?" said Miley, who entered Friday's start on a nice run, with a 2.32 ERA in the first month. "It [is tough], obviously, I pitched two-thirds of an inning, especially at a time where our bullpen was taxed with the whole Gausman situation. That was the hardest part about coming out of the game right there. But Ynoa stepped up [with six scoreless innings] and did an outstanding job."
