Wallace, Pena lead El Paso to sweep

Renfroe has 4-hit game for Double-A San Antonio, Giron 13-for-25 at Class A Fort Wayne

Infielders Brett Wallace and Ramiro Pena homered and right-handed starting pitchers Zack Segovia and Daniel McCutchen allowed a one run over a combined nine innings Friday night as Triple-A El Paso (22-19) swept a doubleheader at New Orleans by identical 4-1 scores.

Elsewhere in the Padres' farm system, Hunter Renfroe had a four-hit night for Double-A San Antonio and 18-year-old shortstop Ruddy Giron was 2-for-5 for Class A Fort Wayne as his batting average dipped to .520 in his debut week.

And San Antonio placed right-handed starter Colin Rea on the seven-day, Texas League disabled list with lower back spasms. Rea is 1-2 with a 1.38 earned run average in eight starts.

Renfroe, the Padres' first-round pick (13th overall) in the 2013 draft, was 4-for-4 with two doubles and a walk with two RBIs to raise his batting average to .252.

Giron had a triple and scored a run, and is now 13-for-25 for the TinCaps.

Center fielder Melvin Upton Jr. played the first game of the doubleheader at New Orleans and went 1-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. He is hitting .333 four games into his rehab assignment with the Chihuahuas.

Zegovia (1-0, 1.80 ERA) allowed one run on three hits and a walk with two strikeouts in the opening game at New Orleans. Right-hander Jay Jackson (1.72 ERA) struck out three in two perfect innings to get the win in the seven-inning game.

McCutchen (4.28 ERA) allowed a hit with two strikeouts in four scoreless innings in the second seven-inning game. Right-hander Nick Vincent (2-1, 2.25 ERA) allowed a walk with two strikeouts in two hitless innings to get the win. Right-hander Marcos Mateo (2.21 ERA) allowed a run on a hit and a walk with a strikeout in the seventh.

Shortstop Pena (.290) hit a decisive three-run homer in the second game and was 3-for-5 with a double and his first homer for three RBIs. Third baseman Wallace (.298) hit his fifth homer in the nightcap and was 1-for-6 in the doubleheader.

Left fielder Alex Dickerson (Poway High) had a two-run double and two walks in the opening game and was 1-for-5 for the doubleheader. He is hitting .316. C Rocky Gale (.342) was 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored in the two games. Second baseman McCoy (.198) had a RBI single in the opener.

There was another move in the organization Friday. Fort Wayne placed right-handed pitcher Dinelson Lamet on the Midwest League's seven-day disabled list and promoted left-handed pitcher Griffin Russell from extended spring training.

Double-A San Antonio (17-23): Frisco 4, Missions 3 (11 innings). CF Travis Jankowski (.342) was 2-for-6. Starting RHP Elliot Morris (3.32 ERA) allowed three runs on six hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings. RHP Michael Dimock (2.12 ERA) allowed two hits with two strikeouts in 2 2/3 scoreless innings. RHP Tayron Guerrero (3.18) had four strikeouts in two perfect innings. RHP Dennis O'Grady (0-1, 6.46 ERA) allowed a run on a hit and two walks with two strikeouts in the 11th to take the loss.

Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore (17-24): Stockton 8, Storm 0. Starting RHP Kyle Lloyd (1-2, 4.50 ERA) allowed two runs on six hits and three walks with six strikeouts in seven innings.

Class A Fort Wayne (14-25): TinCaps 5, Lansing 4. RF Franmil Reyes (.220) was 1-for-2 with a two-run homer and a walk. 1B Trae Santos (.222) was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Starting RHP Ernesto Montas (3.86 ERA) allowed five hits and a walk with four strikeouts in five scoreless innings. LHP Taylor Cox (5.52 ERA) allowed four hits with two walks and three strikeouts in three scoreless innings. RHP Bryan Verbitsky (3.63 ERA) allowed four runs (one earned) on two hits and two walks in two-thirds of an inning. LHP Kyle McGrath got the final out for his fourth save.
