PHOENIX -- A tough week was over for Welington Castillo. It was time for the D-backs' catcher to get back to work.
After missing a week for the arrival of his newborn son and complications arising from the birth, Castillo returned to the lineup for Monday night's 10-6 win in the series opener against the Mets at Chase Field and went 4-for-5, including two doubles, with two RBIs and two runs scored.
"It felt good, my mind felt free, honestly," Castillo said. "Everything went fine, I have the baby at home and my wife, too, healthy, so I'm just here to do what I love to do and do everything to help my team win."
Castillo missed all six of the D-backs' games in New York and Boston. He went on the paternity list on Aug. 9 for the birth of his second child, Jeremiah, and stayed in Phoenix longer when complications arose.
After planning to meet the team in Boston, Castillo was transferred to the bereavement list and remained in Phoenix over the weekend.
"I was in the airport when I got a call from the hospital that [my wife] had postpartum depression or something like that," Castillo said. "That's when I called [general manager Dave Stewart] and he told me to go back with my family."
Castillo's wife, Kissalry, and his son are now home. With his worries behind him, the Arizona catcher returned to the field and immediately made an impact.
He singled in a run off Mets starter Bartolo Colon in the first inning, part of a three-run rally. He doubled and scored in both the third and fifth innings. Then, with a single in the sixth, Castillo matched his career high of four hits, previously set on April 18, 2013.
"Pretty impressive, I guess we can give him a week off and then expect some hits," manager Chip Hale joked. "No, he was swinging the bat before he had to go for the baby, but really nice for him. I'm sure he felt great. It's tough to miss a whole road trip and have all the stress you have with the wife and the baby. And then to come back and get those hits was great, they were all key hits for us."
Worth noting
• The D-backs recalled left-handed pitcher Edwin Escobar from Triple-A Reno and designated left-handed reliever Adam Loewen for assignment on Monday.
Escobar is 6-3 with a 4.25 ERA in 16 starts for Reno and has a 15.95 ERA in three appearances (two starts) for the D-backs this season.
Hale said Escobar and fellow left-hander Steve Hathaway will be used in situational appearances, while left-hander Patrick Corbin will serve as the long reliever.
Loewen posted a 7.94 ERA in eight games for Arizona.
• Hale said outfielder A.J. Pollock (fractured right elbow) will still need 10-14 more rehab games, at least, before returning to the Majors. Pollock is batting .462 (6-for-13) with two homers and four RBIs through five games with Class-A Advanced Visalia. He has played two games in center field.
