Sox recall Zavala; Welington on concussion list

Anderson scratched with right wrist soreness

MINNEAPOLIS -- Seby Zavala was sitting in his Charlotte home watching television at around 1:30 Saturday morning when he received a phone call from Knights manager Mark Grudzielanek.

Zavala was getting the promotion from Triple-A to the White Sox, with catcher Welington Castillo being placed on the seven-day concussion list.

“I actually found out he was hurt 10 minutes before the phone call. I had no idea,” said the No. 22 White Sox prospect per MLB Pipeline, sitting in the visitors’ dugout one hour before first pitch Saturday. “Someone told me he got hurt and 10 minutes later I got a phone call.

“Kind of felt like I knew what was going on, but I didn't want to jump the gun. Honestly, I didn’t really have a reaction. I was kind of just taking it in. It hasn’t really hit me too much yet. I’m sure whenever my number is called, some emotions will come through. It will be fun.”

Zavala, along with No. 12 White Sox prospect Zack Collins, could become the catchers of the future as the White Sox rebuild progresses. Veteran James McCann, who started Saturday, also needs to be placed into that mix.

During Charlotte’s 6-4 victory over Durham Friday, the 25-year-old Zavala launched his sixth home run and drove in two. Zavala battled through a left quad injury during Spring Training and a left wrist problem with Charlotte, but the 12th-round selection in the 2015 Draft feels healthy and ready to go. Zavala struck out as a pinch-hitter to end Saturday’s 8-1 loss to the Twins and will start Sunday’s series finale behind the plate.

“Just have to get some more at-bats, and I feel like I’ll be feeling pretty good,” Zavala said. “Just trying to get better. Defensively, pitch calling, working with pitchers. Just the basics, as long as I get all the little things going right, it should be all right.”

Castillo to concussion list
Manager Rick Renteria believed Castillo would not have to go into concussion protocol immediately following Friday’s loss, with Castillo leaving in the eighth after taking a C.J. Cron foul ball directly off the mask. But that decision changed a little while after Renteria addressed the media.

“After the game he was initially checked out,” Renteria said. “He stayed here and felt some nauseousness and had a little bit of a headache, so he was re-evaluated. He has a mild concussion.”

Anderson scratched
Tim Anderson was scratched from Saturday afternoon’s starting lineup and replaced by Jose Rondon both at shortstop and hitting sixth. Anderson was bothered by right wrist soreness, which he sustained during a second inning at-bat Friday on an 0-1 offering, when a Jose Berrios pitch hit the bat and then hit part of Anderson’s hand, per Renteria.

“The ball hit him on the hand, and he has a nice little laceration there as well. Assuming it's a consequence of the blow,” Renteria said. “He tried to hit and said his wrist was too sore from the blow.

“We decided to scratch him. He'll get treated up and we'll try to get him in the lineup as soon as possible, hopefully ease it enough so he's available to pinch-hit or something. Do everything to get him on the field as soon as possible.”

Rondon pinch-hit for Anderson in the eighth of Friday’s loss and stayed in the game. Renteria said postgame Friday it was a move to simply get Anderson off of his feet for a few innings. The shortstop entered Saturday hitting .337, ranking him second in the American League. His 13 stolen bases also place him second.

He said it
“A good hitting club, you can minimize the damage. That's what you try to do. Hopefully we can generate some offense and kind of keep us on the same plane.” -- Renteria, on facing the power-packed Twins
