Werth's left foot OK after late tension vs. O's

PHILADELPHIA -- In the ninth inning of Thursday's 4-3 loss to the Orioles, Nationals right fielder Jayson Werth was facing left-hander Zach Britton and fouled a ball off his left foot. Werth was in pain and took his time going back into the batter's box.

Meanwhile, Orioles manager Buck Showalter was seen telling Werth to get back in the box. Home-plate umpire C.B. Bucknor was also trying to tell Werth to get back in the box. Nationals manager Matt Williams and assistant athletic trainer Steve Gober came out of the dugout to aide Werth.

"Jayson fouled that ball off the top of his foot; it's painful off the top of the foot," Williams said. "He has no gear on. C.B. was encouraging [Werth] to get back in the box with the game going. Jayson needed a little more time, so we decided to go out."

Werth ended up grounding out to end the game. He said his right foot was all right, and he was in the starting lineup against the Phillies on Friday night. However, he declined to comment on what was said by Bucknor and Showalter.
