Team to watch
The Carolina Mudcats' Opening Day roster features nine of the Brewers' Top 30 prospects, a group highlighted by a wave of talented young hitters in Isan Diaz (MLBPipeline.com's No. 63 overall prospect), Trent Clark and Lucas Erceg. First-rounder (2016) Corey Ray (No. 28 overall) is likely to head there as well once he completes his rehab in extended spring training. And with a rotation that could include Marcos Diplan, Cody Ponce, Kodi Medeiros, Freddy Peralta and Corbin Burnes, the Mudcats also will have plenty of talent on the mound.

New faces
General manager David Stearns continued to add potentially impactful prospects to an already loaded system during December's Winter Meetings, acquiring shortstop Mauricio Dubon and right-hander Josh Pennington -- along with big leaguer Travis Shaw and a PTBNL -- for reliever Tyler Thornburg. Dubon, 22, is set to make his organizational debut with Double-A Biloxi after batting .339/.371/.538 over 62 games last season with Double-A Portland.
On the shelf
Pennington, meanwhile, will begin the season rehabbing in extended spring training. The 21-year-old underwent surgery to remove a bone chip in his elbow following the 2016 season. Ray had surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee in October and spent much of the spring rehabbing. Though he's fully healthy and returned to game action late in March, the Brewers will hold him back in extended to begin the year. The news is less optimistic for right-hander Devin Williams, who'll miss all of 2017 after recently undergoing Tommy John surgery, and Phil Bickford will sit out the first 50 games of the season as a result of his second positive test for a drug of abuse last December.
