Putnam goes on DL with groin injury; Webb activated

White Sox swap relievers to bolster bullpen

CHICAGO -- Zach Putnam doesn't feel as if he'll be out of action for too long with a strained right groin.

But the White Sox need live arms, so they returned Daniel Webb from his rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Charlotte and reinstated him from the 15-day disabled list prior to Saturday's contest with the Mariners and put Putnam on the DL retroactive to Thursday.

Putnam sustained the injury while warming up in the bullpen last Friday in Seattle, but threw one inning against Boston on Wednesday, allowing one run.

"We all wanted me to get back out there as soon as possible, and with something like this it was just a little too soon," Putnam said. "So, they can't be down a man in the bullpen for much longer. Those guys are pretty taxed. They needed to make a move and this was the move. I don't think it's even going to take 15 days to get right. It's just, obviously, we don't have another choice for anything to do. I'll be fine."

"It's still there, even the last time he pitched," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. "You're very close to that September line, but any time you're short out there, you could run the risk of everybody else getting overtaxed. It's just best for him to get this cleared up to where we know when he comes back pitching."

Rosters will expand on Tuesday, so another reinforcement or two should be joining the White Sox from the Minors. Webb, 26, would have been one of those guys, as he worked his way back from a back strain that put him out of action.

Through 17 big league appearances this season, Webb has a 1-0 record with a 2.49 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 21 2/3 innings. But Webb felt the back pain when he tried to extend through his pitches, causing him to cut things off and leaving pitches up in the zone.

Much like Putnam, Webb felt the injury came from rushing to try to get ready before a game. He wasn't quite loose enough and gave it too much of an effort before he was ready to go.

"Now, whatever they need me to do, I'm ready to do it," Webb said. "I'd never felt that before, and that's why I said something about it. But I took some time off due to rehab and I feel a lot better."

Webb worked 1 2/3 innings against the Mariners on Saturday night, allowing a run on one hit and walking one.
